A Little About
Welcome to Cindy Schalich Designs. Mosaics are my creative outlet and allow me to step out of my busy work/family world and play with my “crayon box” in a world of whimsy and beauty.
My passion for mosaics was born in the mid 2000’s when I took a beginning mosaics course at a local community center in Sonoma County, California. While the grout that first stuck to my hands could be washed off, I found that my newfound love for mosaics was more permanently sealed in my heart.
My project in that first course involved gluing ceramic tiles to a stepping stone, then grouting. I caught the bug and turned a loft room in my husband’s drafty construction shop into my craft room. There I continued creating, learning, hosting friend “mosaic nights” and discovering what mosaic art motivated and inspired me. Making 12” x 12” mirrors and picture frames, attending local craft fairs and shows, I sold some pieces here and there, spurring me on to continue experimenting and finding that mosaic style I was craving.
At some point I discovered glass on glass mosaics using old windows and stained glass and my “Aha” moment was born! I loved the way the light shone through the glass when hung or propped in a window casing and started making and selling windows of all shapes and sizes. Soon after, I discovered the world of unlimited mosaic tesserae, substrates, styles and techniques. In particular, I have found my favorite materials are stained glass, stones and other items to create mixed media pieces. The way the light, tone and shape affect a piece are endless and experimenting is the journey to the pieces you see here.
Nature’s endless beauty, colors and the remarkable seasons here in gorgeous Sonoma County have captivated me lately as well as more eclectic and contemporary designs. Each piece is unique and one of a kind. I don’t typically seek commission work but if you have an idea, contact me and we can explore the possibilities.
In early 2015, my dream of having my own studio was born, here on our property west of the town of Fulton, California. My studio is a dream come true and just steps away from my home. Eventually I plan on hosting open studio events and classes.
